Upper Devonian mercury record from North America and its implications for the Frasnian–Famennian mass extinction

چکیده
The Frasnian–Famennian biotic crisis (~372 Ma) was one of the “big five” mass extinction events in Phanerozoic. This event associated with dramatic climatic and oceanographic perturbations, including oceanic anoxia, global cooling, sea-level fluctuations. Large-scale volcanic activity is several possible triggers that have been suggested as ultimate cause this crisis, based on Hg enrichment data from widespread sections. However, there are also sections do not show a across boundary. To further investigate hypothesis trigger for event, mercury (Hg) analyses were performed six North American records (five Appalachian Basin Illinois Basin) include There no uniformly observed at or below boundary sites. A potentially volcanically driven anomaly found Basin; however, occurs stratigraphically above Mercury studied sites question timing volcanism may be responsible event. Further studies needed to fully understand geographic distribution eruption history large igneous provinces, well link between during interval.

First record of the Devonian lycophyte Leclercqia from South America
A single leafy stem from the Middle or lowermost Upper Devonian Campo Chico Formation, Sierra de Perija, western Venezuela, is the first record of the important Devonian herbaceous lycophyte Leclercqia from South America, usually considered as part of western Gondwana. The seemingly cosmopolitan distribution of this genus is discussed in relation to coeval assemblages and palaeocontinental reco...
متن کاملEoarthropleura ( Arthropoda , Arthropleurida ) from the Silurian of Britain and the Devonian of North America
Eoarthropleura, previously known only from the Lower Devonian of Germany, is reported here from the Upper Silurian (PHdoli) of Shropshire, England, the Upper Devonian (Frasnian) of New York State, USA, and the Lower Devonian (Emsian) of New Brunswick, Canada. The Shropshire form (E. ludfordensis n. sp.) is the earliest representative of the Arthropleurida. The New York species, originally ascri...
متن کاملEarly land animals in north america: evidence from devonian age arthropods from gilboa, new york.
A new fossil site near Gilboa, New York, is one of only three where fossils of terrestrial arthropods of Devonian age have been found. The new Gilboan fauna is younger than the other two but richer in taxa. Fragmentary remains and nearly whole specimens assigned to Eurypterida, Arachnida (Trigonotarbida, Araneae, Amblypygi, and Acari), Chilopoda [Craterostigmatomorpha(?) and Scuterigeromorpha(?...

Microgastropod fauna from the Upper Devonian Cephalopod Bed and overlying Lower Tournaisian strata of the original reference section of the Shishtu Formation have been examined. Twenty genera and one unknown genus have been identified. The original aragonite shells have been replaced either by pyrite or fluorapatite
متن کاملA Marine Stem-Tetrapod from the Devonian of Western North America
The origin of terrestrial vertebrates represents one of the major evolutionary and ecological transformations in the history of life, and the established timing and environment of this transition has recently come under scrutiny. The discovery and description of a well-preserved fossil sarcopterygian (fleshy-limbed vertebrate) from the Middle Devonian of Nevada helps to refine and question aspe...
